In the Emu War of 1932, Australia deployed the Royal Australian Artillery soldiers to manage the emu population in Western Australia, which had been destroying crops in the area. The war lasted 1 month, 1 week, and 1 day. While they managed to kill close to 1000 emus, the war was famously unsuccessful in controlling the emu population.

Electromagnetic radiation, such as light, hitting a material causes electrons to emit from the material. Strangely, the strength of the beam of light (intensity) does not determine whether electrons are emitted. Rather, the color of the beam of light (frequency) does. Based on this, in 1905, Einstein proposed that a beam of light is not merely a wave, but actually consists of discrete packets of energy (quanta). This argued that light also exists as particles (later termed photons). The discovery of the particle-wave duality of light laid the foundation for modern physics.
